I have been toying with the idea of adding more Memphis content into the blog. With summer basically here, I think the warm weather was the push I needed to commit to this new vertical space. I am a proud Memphian through and through, so it only seems right I showcase the best we have to offer to you guys.
There a zillion and one ways to google what is popular in any area, the top 10 lists of this and that, and many more ways to search the highlights of Memphis. The secret, or not as well known, places are the ones I am really interested in. The places that only a local knows about, but that everyone should get to enjoy. I will have personal reasons why everyone of them will make my list, but the most important is that they are sort of hidden treasures… or what I like to call “Memphis Gems.”
Kicking off my list is Jerry’s Snow Cones! Jerry’s has been a staple in Memphis for as long as I can remember, even Elvis was said to visit. Between the 20’s and 30’s Jerry’s originally opened as a Sinclair gas station. The rumor is that when the cars were being serviced (filled with gas) the owners would serve the kids in the cars sno cones. When it closed in 1960 a local couple purchased it and turned it into a car was, and sno shack. They called it Jerry’s and the rest is history.
They tout themselves as not inventing the sno cone (or snow ball as I know it as, because my Dad is from New Orleans and that’s what their called there) but they did invent the “sno cone supreme.” And let me tell you from personal experience, no matter what flavor you choose, you definitely want to make it a supreme; which means they add soft serve ice cream to the top.
local tip: try to go when they first open at 11 am, during an off time, or late around 8:30 pm. Right after school, or right after dinner will have a pretty lengthy wait!
My lemon and white stripe yellow dress is from maurices, and has become a summer fav. My sunnies and purse are both sold out, but I linked my same style sunglasses in two different color options. I also linked a very similar straw tote. My gladiator studded sandals are from last summer, but they are restocked, and are under $18!!
